Bigleaf maple
Acer macrophyllum
The largest maple in Canada, reaching heights of 36 metres. When it grows in the forest, it develops a narrow crown that is supported by a stem free of branches for half its length.

Maple trees include a broad spectrum of types, sizes, shapes and foliage. They are evergreen or deciduous, shrubby or lofty, with deeply lobed or finely cut leaves.

The deeply cut leaves, about 6 inches across or more, have wiggly edges, a pale underside, and stalks 6 or so inches long.

"Big" is the perfect word for Bigleaf maple. As far as maples go, nothing about this species is anything but big.

General Notes
Resistant to oak root fungus. Susceptible to powdery mildew. Some forms are quite drought tolerant. Sudden Oak Death manifested as leaf spot. Has Fragrant Flower.

Our native, Bigleaf maple, common in the Northwest, is a large, handsome, deciduous tree. Covered with moss, they often host Polypodium glycyrrhiza (Licorice fern), which grows on their trunks.

00 b/f, much more than bigleaf maple burl, for example. It comes from Padauk trees (Pterocarpus spp.) of Southeast Asia. Padauk trees are quite common but the burl is extremely rare.

The grey-brown and shallowly grooved trunk is quite similar to that of Seattle's native bigleaf maple, but the leaf is not as large or deeply cut, and the seeds spread their wings wider and have no bristly hairs.
