Bittersweet is a fast growing deciduous vine with simple, alternate, oval leaves that grow to about 2 inches long. The vines climb by twining around other plants, sometimes girdling, but not killing the plant that supports them.

Oriental bittersweet is a vigorous, woody, deciduous climber with rounded mid-green leaves that turn yellow in autumn. It bears small green flowers in summer and axillary clusters of bead-like red berries with contrasting yellow casings in the fall.

It has a bittersweet peppery taste with anise undertones. Leaves are good in salads, egg and cheese dishes and vinegar. Tarragon tea stimulates the appetite, aids digestion and is a general tonic. Name comes from the French word for little dragon.

Poisonous berries are found on holly plants, yews, mistletoe, ivy plants, Jerusalem cherry, bittersweet and crown of thorns. The pearly white berries of mistletoe are particularly toxic.
