Bloodroot is aptly named. It has thick rhizomes that are about the size of your finger. When the root is cut, the stem exudes a red sap that looks just like blood.

Bloodroot grows in North America from Nova Scotia to Florida, throughout the Apallachian mountains & Great Lakes region, to Nebraska & East Texas.

Sanguinaria canadensis (bloodroot) offers a real challenge. The challenge is not in growing the plant, as that is not difficult, but rather in seeing its enchanting white flowers before, with unseemly haste, the petals fall off.

Bloodroot has many uses: it produces a dye (various red tones), it has been used to treat skin cancers and warts, and it is used commercially in toothpaste and mouth wash to fight plaque. It shouldn't be ingested, however, as it is toxic.
