A member of the conifer clan, Ephedra equisetina is commonly called bluestem joint fir due to its finely textured blue stems. In spring, it features a conspicuous froth of yellow blooms that are often followed by red berries.

It grows with erect, round, jointed glaucous-blue stems covered with a grey waxy bloom, which earns it the name Candle Plant.

Trailing glaucous blue stems terminating in clusters of chartreuse flowers that fade to apricot in late April-May. We like to use it amongst Viola labradorica where it's sprawling stems are disguised by the violet's dark purple foliage.

One of the showiest Sea Hollies, its stout blue stems hold large, steel-blue flowers and bluish, leathery, toothed leaves.

Don't forget to seek out the flowering grasses. On Michigan's dune areas the heavy flower spikes of the American beach grasses wave their greeting. Or visit the open meadows to find the clumps of little blue stems, indian grass, or big blue stem.

This variety has deeply cut deep blue bracts held on stiff blue stems in July and August. The attractive dark green marbled foliage which appears before the flowers is shown off to best effect planted in gravel.

some suitable native alternatives for Sericea lespedeza include butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa), joe-pye weed (Eupatorium dubium), black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida), big blue stem (Andropogon gerardii), or Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans).
