Box Elder is common along lower elevation streams, sometimes growing to 35 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter. Often there are many small branches at the base and along the knobby, distorted trunk.

box elder (Acer negundo) has compound (i.e. pinnate) leaves with 3-9 relatively broad leaflets. The margins of the leaflets may be toothed (i.e. crenate or serrate) or slightly lobed.

Field Marks: The box elder has opposite leaves divided into 3 or 5 or 7 leaflets. It differs from ashes by its green twigs and paired fruits.
Habitat: Wet woods, along streams, damp thickets.

Box elder leaves are often light yellow when they first come out, aging to pale green in summer, and turning yellowish brown in fall before they drop. Young twigs are bright green. The flowers and fruits are typical maple.

There is a tree called the 'Box Elder,' mentioned by W. J. Bean in his Trees and Shrubs hardy in the British Isles; this is not a true Elder, however, but one of the American maples that yield sugar.

Honey fungus can attack many woody and herbaceous perennials. No plants are completely immune, but some have very good resistance, such as Taxus (yew), Juglans nigra (black walnut) and Acer negundo (box elder).
