Buckeye (Aesculus) - Mostly medium-sized trees, hardy and excellent for park or garden. The common variety is an exception as to size, and one of the most beautiful of flowering trees.

Red Buckeye, Yellow Buckeye
The large, dense, pyramidal shape of this tree is echoed in its many flower panicles. The inedible brown fruit of these Horse Chestnuts or Buckeyes holds slightly toxic, glossy seeds. Can also be grown as a shrub.

'Buckeye' is a garden mum of the semi-double cushion variety, and bears flowers in vivid crimson.Chrysanthemum is made up of both annualsand perennials and are best known for their showy flowers.

Red buckeye has a vast distribution. It is present in the eastern half of North America, extending as far north as Quebec, as far west as California and as far south as Florida (Kartesz, 1999).

Aesculus pavia, or Red Buckeye, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to Missouri to Southern Illinois, extending as far east as North Carolina and as far south as Texas.

SIGNS: The toxins in Buckeye and Horsechestnut affect the gastrointestinal tract as well as the nervous system. The saponic glycoside aesculin in addition to suspected alkaloids cause the toxic signs.

Susceptible to powdery mildew. SelecTree lists no cultivars of pavia.

Buckeye (Junonia coenia) This caterpillar is gardener-friendly because it eats weeds such as plantain. The "eyespots" on both wings of the adult are used to frighten predators.

This is generally a very trouble-free species the leaves of bottlebrush buckeye are usually free of the leaf blotch and leaf scorch problems associated with some of the other buckeyes.

They combine well with oakleaf hydrangeas, bottlebrush buckeye, Kousa dogwood and magnolias. Smaller rhododendrons will grow in containers. Be sure that they have holes in them for drainage and are large enough.
