Butterfly bush or Buddleia davidii is a flowering bush that is native to China. This perennial plant forms clusters of fragrant flowers in purple, blue, pink, red, or white.

Butterfly bush is a classic summer flowering shrub. Depending on the cultivar, it can start flowering in June and may continue flowering until late fall.

Butterfly bush is a fast growing, open, usually gangly shrub growing 6 to 10 feet tall with an overall coarse texture. Leaves are finely tooth, gray beneath and somewhat aromatic when crushed.

Butterfly bush likes well drained, average soil. They thrive in fairly dry conditions once established. Roots may perish in wet soil. Butterfly bushes are semi-evergreen in climates with mild winters.

Like larger butterfly bushes, it can be trained to mature into the form of a tree; or it can be annually pruned back to two feet to induce it to be a round compact shrub; or it can be given its space to fountain into its full breadth.
