Buttonweed is an annual herb, native to S. Asia. It grows up to 1 m tall, and has velvet-like heart-shaped leaves 15-25 cm broad.
Virginia buttonweed grows in wild areas of Connecticut, but there's some uncertainty whether it's really native here. It is certainly native to coastal regions from New Jersey to Florida.
Virginia buttonweed is a native emersed aquatic plant common throughout Florida. It is found in wet flatwoods, swamps, marshes and ditches (Wunderlin, 2003). It flowers all year.
