Evergreen ground cover, 4-24 inches (10-60 cm) high, spread of 2+ ft (60 cm), upright branching, dense, leafy ascending branches forming thick mats.

'Roland Haagen' bears flowers in a pastel purple-pink and has foliage in yellow-bronze which takes on tints of orange in the winter.

Calluna 'Mrs. Ronald Gray' is a remarkably low growing, handsome heather. I have only one plant growing on top of a rock wall next to heaths and lavenders. It makes a great ground cover, filling in between perennials and small shrubs.

heather (Calluna vulgaris) is a low-growing shrub (generally less than 0.5 m tall) with purple, pink or whitish flowers that are relatively small (2-4 mm long). Its short, oblong or triangular leaves (up to 3.5 mm long) are arranged in opposite pairs.

The cultivar of Calluna vulgaris shown in the photo above is "Tib" (sometimes incorrectly "Tibb") but was labeled when we obtained it as "Mrs. Tibb," which was incorrect despite such an official-looking printed label.

In the peaty, well-drained soil that's ideal for Erica, Calluna and rhododendrons, I would also grow Andromeda 'Blue Ice', a dwarf bog rosemary with outstanding powdery blue foliage year-round.

Other familiar members of this family include the heaths and heathers (Erica and Calluna) mountain laurel (Kalmia), lily-of-the-valley shrub (Pieris), cranberry (Vaccinium) , Leucothe and Andromeda.

Examples: Bouvardia, Heather (Calluna), Erica, Helianthemum, Hyssopus, Lavandula, Ruta, Santolina, Thymus, gorse (Ulex).

The common heather—the heather of Scotland—is Calluna vulgaris, sometimes called ling. Native to Europe and Asia Minor, it is now common also in Greenland and in North America. Its multiple branches have been used for brooms.

(2007) detail the diversity of fungal associated with Vaccinium and Calluna - some may be ectomycorrhizal. Selosse et al.

The small oblong leaves resemble those of Scotch heather (Calluna vulgaris also known by its synonym Erica vulgaris) and are about 3/4 to 1 in (1.9 cm) long and 1/4 to 1/2 in (0.6-1.3 cm) wide.
