heather (Calluna vulgaris) is a low-growing shrub (generally less than 0.5 m tall) with purple, pink or whitish flowers that are relatively small (2-4 mm long). Its short, oblong or triangular leaves (up to 3.5 mm long) are arranged in opposite pairs.

The cultivar of Calluna vulgaris shown in the photo above is "Tib" (sometimes incorrectly "Tibb") but was labeled when we obtained it as "Mrs. Tibb," which was incorrect despite such an official-looking printed label.

The common heather—the heather of Scotland—is Calluna vulgaris, sometimes called ling. Native to Europe and Asia Minor, it is now common also in Greenland and in North America. Its multiple branches have been used for brooms.

The small oblong leaves resemble those of Scotch heather (Calluna vulgaris also known by its synonym Erica vulgaris) and are about 3/4 to 1 in (1.9 cm) long and 1/4 to 1/2 in (0.6-1.3 cm) wide.
