Camphorweed originally grew only in southeastern United States, but it has been spreading to the north, and it reached Connecticut in the 20th century.

Camphor tree can be found throughout Florida, Georgia, and western Texas. Habitats conducive for camphor tree establishment are dry, disturbed areas, such as roadsides. Camphor tree will also invade natural areas.

It has soft needles which smell of camphor when crushed, and orange-brown cones.

They have disinfectant properties and contain small quantities of camphor[95, 169]. The leaves are burnt as a fumigant to get rid of fleas[257]. The leaves have been hung in bunches to freshen the air[257].

Safrole, used in flavorings and medicinals, is obtained from oil of sassafras as well as from the camphor tree.

It has an excellent scent devoid of of the camphoriness of some lavenders, so that "Twickes" is a popular crop-variety for obtaining extracts used in candies. The scent is best & srongest when grown in poorer soil.

Noteworthy characteristics: Highly adaptable to many soil types and grows in sun or shade, though it blooms more when grown in full sun.

15% of an essential oil that contains camphor, borneol and thujone. Both the leaves and the oil and they have been used to kill fleas and lice. Thujone is an effective insecticide, but it is highly toxic to mammals when taken in excess.

The scent is similar to that of camphor with hints of rosemary. The leaves and flowers are said to be poisonous if consumed in large quantities.

The British botanist Henry N. Ridley (1855-1956) described the flowers as smelling of cloves, while some have said they smell faintly of camphor. Bulbophyllum macranthum is pollinated by fruit flies (Bactrocera species).
