CANNAS - WINTER STORAGE
After cannas have been damaged by a killing frost, cut the tops off within two or three inches of the soil. Dig the tuberous roots with a spading fork taking care not to damage the fleshy root system.

Canna x generalis 'Pretoria', or Bengal Tiger Canna, is one of the prettiest hybrid cannas that I have grown. The variegated foliage, light green and cream striped leaves, will reach about 2 feet (60 cm) long by about 1 foot (30 cm) wide.

Cannas do not require covering for the winter. Often, they are laid upside down in a box and placed in a cool, dry location for the winter. Proper temperature should be between 45 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cannas bear broad, smooth paddle-like leaves reminiscent of banana plants. The oversize leaves make it easy to create dramatic combinations with other, more finely textured plants.

Cannabis is known to be an effective analgesic that relieves pain with minimal side effects (unlike opiates which have unwanted side effects like constipation and addiction).

Cannas are considered root hardy only through Zone 8, but we gardeners are always pushing that limit. In a garden I tended a few years ago, I could tell how hard the winter had been by how close to the house the surviving canna were.

Canna Lilies are superb in damp - though not fully winter hardy in UK. Often see them growing alongside water's edge in Thailand.
