The name "cardinal flower" refers to the scarlet robes worn by the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. I was only able to find it at Bowman's Wildflower Farm (a nature preserve).

This dicotyledon exists in floodplain forests and spring runs. There are 13 species of Lobelia occurring in Florida (Wunderlin, 2003). Cardinal flower is found extensively throughout the US and Canada (Kartesz, 1999).
