Carica papaya. Pawpaw. Originally from southern Mexico and Costa Rica, widely grown on the tropics and sub tropics. It was first brought here on the immigrant ship Edwin in 1616.

Season: Best quality comes during warm months July to October. Some fruit all year. Fast growing herbaceous plant with thick, hollow trunk. Leaves lobed to 2' across.

---Description---A small tree seldom above 20 feet high, 1 foot in diameter, tapering to about 4 or 5 inches at its summit.

(pp´), soft-stemmed tree (Carica papaya) of tropical America resembling a palm with a crown of palmately lobed leaves.

Among the trypsins we have the pa pain of the Papaw fruit (Carica Papaya), the bromelin of the Pine-apple, and the enzymes present in many germinating seeds, in the seedlings of several plants, and in other parts.
