Wild carrot can be distiguished in a few ways, one of which is the presence of the small purple flower in the center of the umbrell. Another reason to skip them is that the roots are very woody. You'd have to work very hard to have much to eat.

The name "carrot" comes from the French word "carotte." Carrots originated in the Mediterranean. Around the first century, Greek doctors used carrots as a stomach tonic. They were used as food during the 13th century in Europe.

DESCRIPTION: Carrotwood is a fast-growing evergreen tree that grows to a height of about 35 feet. The leaves are large and compound, made up of four to ten oblong leaflets, each 4 to 8 inches long, and attached by a swollen stalk.

'Artist' is a long carrot, best grown for fall harvest. It is especially high in vitamin A and has a wonderfully sweet flavor. Loose, well-drained soil, free from clods and stones are a must for carrots.

Carrot - This delicious vegetable is a staple in our family. We store the roots in boxes of garden loam far into April. I sow the seed for the Fall crop about the 5th of July.

General Notes
Tolerates hot and dry winds. Some mature trees produce marble size fruits which drop and can be a nuisance. Some never fruit. SelecTree lists no cultivars of anacardioides.

Carrots' lacy foliage would make an attractive border that you can pull up and eat at the end of the season.
Usage
Carrots are very easy to grow. Plant in loose, friable soil or the roots will be misshapen.

The Carrot, Beetroot, and the like are swollen tap-roots.
The ordinary tap-root is typically seen in a germinating Broad Bean. It is a long root that grows straight down into the ground on a line with the main stem.

A member of the carrot family, the leaves can be eaten either fresh in salads, or cooked. I haven't tried it myself but plan to do so next year.

Wild Carrot
The seeds are a beneficial antiseptic diuretic useful in the treatment of cystitis and prostatitis. Also, the seeds are used for the prevention and washing out of gravel and urinary stones.

But fresh carrots - Daucus carrota sativa - are in exception. They must be locally grown, are on permanent embargo to help prevent the introduction of the carrot rust fly.

This plant's feathery foliage is somewhat like that of a carrot. It is a lustrous green and makes a fresh looking clump. Flat heads of spicy smelling white flowers come in June and, by September, these have ripened into golden brown seedheads.

To most people celery is a vegetable that is bought at the market. It is prized for its long crunchy stalks and biting flavor.

The spadix emerges looking like a giant purple carrot that later develops a bad case of acne before it goes limp. After flowering, and if it had really good sex, you'll soon enjoy seeing the 1' tall spike of dark blue berries.
