An astringent medicine, called catechu or cutch, is procured from several species, but more especially from Acacia catechu, by boiling down the wood and evaporating the solution so as to get an extract.

catechu, yield the dye . Blackwood (A. melanoxylon) is valued in Australia for its hardwood timber. Other members of the genus are valuable for , for perfume and essential oils, and for tannins; some are used as ornamentals.

Chemically it closely resembles catechu, and is very like it in action, but it is less astringent and therefore less effective.
