Most cat owners know about the narcotic effects catnip can have on cats. But the herb can also have a calming effect on humans. It makes a soothing and refreshing herbal tea. And it's easy to grow in pots or in the garden.

An herbal product marketed as Calm Child Herbal Syrup consisted mostly of hawthorn & catnip.

Catnip (N. cataria) is a tall, sprawling plant (90 by 45 cm) with aromatic leaves; its white or lavender summer flowers are not showy. Cats find it irresistible and may love it to death. Reseeds readily in sun or part shade.

One odd problem is the fact that the trunks have a catnip-like aroma which cats love to rub against. When plants are small, this can be a problem as they can rub off any new shoots which emerge in the spring.

Marigold, catnip, and tansy seem to deter beetles as well, because of their strong fragrance. Handpicking adults is another option. Insecticides that are labelled to control Colorado Potato Beetle can be used. Follow the label to a tee.

Wood cuttings from the species Lonicera tartarica, native to Eurasia, are sold as cat toys. The wood contains nepetalactone, which is the active ingredient found in catnip.

One example is ground-hugging plants including white-flowered Mount Atlas daisy and pink thrift. Pair them with the compact varieties of lavender-blooming catnip.
Taller water-wise perennials include oriental poppy and yellow yarrow.

This prolific bloomer benefits from a shearing several times during the season to remove spent flowers. 18-24" high. Named for the English garden Walker's Low. Hardy in zones 5-9. Relation to Catnip, but has no attraction to cats.

Attractive to cats, in a manner similar to that of Nepeta (Catnip), protect young plants from their attentions.

Extracts from Tecoma stans leaves have been found to inhibit the growth of the yeast infection, Candida albicans. Yellow elder also contains several compounds noted for their catnip-like effects on felines.

The English name Cat Thyme makes sense because the habitat, form and scale recall very closely its cousin Thymus vulgaris. In effect it is fair to call it Catnip Plant.
