Although many trees claim the name, a true Cedar is a member of the genus Cedrus. There are four species in the genus. These conifers are native to the Himalayan Mountains and the Mediterranean regions.

Golden deodar cedar
Outstanding golden-yellow foliage in spring, turning greenish-yellow later in the year. Ordinarily a large tree, this particular specimen grew into an unusual prostrate habit. Nearly 6' long at planting, 5/1/00.

Cedar rust can defoliate trees and disfigure fruit wherever Juniperus virginiana, the red cedar, or Rocky Mountain cedar, J. scopulorum, is established. After the first eight weeks of the season, the rust threat is over.

CEDAR
Cedar trees (genus Cedrus) are large evergreen coniferous trees (up to about 80 feet tall) that have dense clusters of needles held in wide, woody peg-like structures. The barrel-shaped cones are held upright above a branch.

Features
The taxonomy of the genus Cedrus is debated by the botanists. Depending on who you believe, you can recognize one, two or four species.

Alaska Cedar

Japanese cedar is the national tree of Japan, commonly planted around temples, with many hugely impressive trees planted centuries ago. It can be difficult to grow from seed.

Cedar chips, pine needles and rinsed, crushed egg shells tend to repel slugs, either due to odor, resin and/or sharp edges. In fact, many hosta growers are reporting remarkable successes with pine needles applied two to three inches thick.
