Two trees stand out prominently at the Art building: the purpleleaf beech and the lofty Cedar of Lebanon.

The Cedar Elm is a slow growing semi evergreen or deciduous tree with dark leaves that turn a yellow-gold in fall and have a rough sand paper-like texture.

Onion Cedar is a tall evergreen tree, up to 30 m, with a dense glossy dark-green crown. Its bark is dark brown with vertical fissures. If the bark is cut, a pink-red underbark is exposed, and the tree exudes a red sap with a strong onion odour.

The genus Calocedrus contains 3 species, one from the Pacific Coast of North America and 2 from China, Burma, and Taiwan.

Deodara cedar is a finicky tree to grow. Like most conifers it requires excellent drainage to prosper. But unlike many other members of the pine family, to which the true cedars belong, Deodara cedar should have a good, fertile soil.

Eastern Redcedar trees are pyramidal in shape. The green foliage develops a purple to brownish cast in winter. Sexes are separate. Female trees produce small blue fruits. Selected cultivars are usually smaller and more dense in growth habit.

Golden deodar cedar
Outstanding golden-yellow foliage in spring, turning greenish-yellow later in the year. Ordinarily a large tree, this particular specimen grew into an unusual prostrate habit. Nearly 6' long at planting, 5/1/00.

Cedar rust can defoliate trees and disfigure fruit wherever Juniperus virginiana, the red cedar, or Rocky Mountain cedar, J. scopulorum, is established. After the first eight weeks of the season, the rust threat is over.

Cedar trees (genus Cedrus) are large evergreen coniferous trees (up to about 80 feet tall) that have dense clusters of needles held in wide, woody peg-like structures. The barrel-shaped cones are held upright above a branch.

Japanese cedar is the national tree of Japan, commonly planted around temples, with many hugely impressive trees planted centuries ago. It can be difficult to grow from seed.

Salt cedar. Salt shrub. Rose tamarisk. Flowering cypress. From China and temperate E Asia. Introduced to cultivation in 1827. Whether T. ramosissima should be considered a synonym of T.

It is sometimes associated with cedar and hemlock. Michigan is at the western edge of the range of this species, which is native to woods from Nova Scotia to the eastern edge of Wisconsin and south through the Appalachians to Georgia and Mississippi.

Bermuda Cedar. Endemic, a species of juniper, with dense, blue-green foliage. The leaves are scale-like, overlapping one another, with berries that turn a dark purple.

'Glauca' - Known as the Blue Atlas Cedar. Most commonly used and more available than the species. Has blue-green needle color. Perhaps more accurately a variety (similar to the Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens var. glauca)).

Cedar chips, pine needles and rinsed, crushed egg shells tend to repel slugs, either due to odor, resin and/or sharp edges. In fact, many hosta growers are reporting remarkable successes with pine needles applied two to three inches thick.
