Chamaerops humilis is a clump forming, shrubby palm that is grown for its evergreen foliage. This Palm originates around the hot dry areas of the Mediterranean Sea Basin.

Botanical Name: Chamaerops humilis
European Fan Palm (aka Mediterranean Fan Palm) is the only palm native to Europe, and is hardier than most palms.

Chamaerops humilis (dwarf fan palm) AGM: Forms clumps of fan-shaped leaves, up to to 2m (6½ft) tall. It is wind resistant and will tolerate -12°C (10°F) or lower. It is suitable for heavier clay soils and partial shade. C. humilis var.

Soak overnight prior to sowing at 75-80F/24-27C, fertile, well-drained soil; germination can be irregular. Suckers may be divided off as they develop.

General Notes
Mediterranean Fan Palm is a beautiful multi-trunked palm, usually reserved for temperate coastal climates and southern California.

Mediterranean or European Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis): This palm is a small, clumping fan palm with stiff leaves and spiny leaf stems. The growth rate is slow, and in the Southeast a height of 5 feet is common.

(2003) found that it was volatiles produced by the leaves of Chamaerops humilis that attracted its weevil pollinator. Thermogenesis has been detected in the flowers of some Arecaceae (Seymour 2001).
