Chamomile or German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is found occasionally in the north part of our area. It is also an non-native. It has a pleasant aroma and is glabrous.

The Chamomile tribe includes the most aromatic members of the Aster family, such as sagebrush, yarrow, tansy, and of course, chamomile. As a kid I encountered many different species of sage (Artemisia). There are 19 species just in Montana.

It is a relative of chamomile, and you can make a tea from it. When I did this, however, the tea was disappointingly bland.

The third photo from early June shows the yellow eye of the originally white blooms, & at this stage they are very like chamomile blooms in size & appearance.

It grows well with most plants, especially roses, carrots, beet and chamomile, but it inhibits the growth of legumes. It should not be planted near alfalfa, as each species affects the other negatively. Plants often divide freely at the base.
