Cherry Trees for Fruit
One of the best-known trees that produce berries is the cherry tree. Cherry trees grow in slightly acidic soil, preferring a pH of around 6.2 to 6.8.

Black cherry flowers are small, white, five-petaled flowers borne on finger-size panicles produced at the ends of branches. The pea-size, red-changing-to-black, berries appear in August and are sometimes used for jellies or wine making.

Healthy cherry leaves contain prunasin, a cyanide precursor that in itself is non-toxic. When the leaves are damaged, the prunasin molecule is split and free cyanide (also called prussic acid or hydrocyanic acid) is liberated.

Yoshino cherry originated around 1870 in Tokyo as a natural hybrid. It grows larger than most flowering cherries, and sets some fruit, albeit small and plain. Later in spring you can see Hisakura and Kwanzan cherries open their pinker, larger flowers.

Catalina cherry has toothed leaves that are not prickly like those of P. ilicifolia and in fact mature leaves may be practically smooth-edged. The flowers are in long spikes as with P. ilicifolia; the fruit is a black edible cherry with large stones.

Carolina cherry laurel is an evergreen shrub or small tree with shiny green leaves and bowl-shaped, fragrant white flowers borne in dense clusters in spring. The fruit is lustrous, cherry-like, and black.

The Barbados cherry is a shrub or small tree that grows up to 15 feet tall with wide spread branches and evergreen oval leaves. The leaves are evergreen, simple, 0.5-15 cm long, with an entire, wavy margin.

Cornus mas has an abundance of small yellow flowers on naked twigs in February. These are tiny and beautiful, and they have a fresh, almost acidic fragrance.

Notes
Jerusalem-cherry is an indoor ornamental grown for its colorful berries. Children or family pets that ingest moderate amounts of leaf or berry material may experience abdominal pains, gastroenteritis and vomiting.

Tropaeolum majus 'Cherry Rose' has rose red flowers on compact trailing plants. They look great in the vegetable, herb or ornamental garden. Nasturtium leaves, flowers and seeds are edible and add a peppery taste to salads and vinegars.

Origin: The capulin cherry is native and common throughout the Valley of Mexico from Sonora to Chiapas and Veracruz and possibly western Guatemala.

These compact, rosetted, evergreen perennials, grown as indoor plants, can be tricky and may require some special attention. Heart-shaped leaves (to 2") are medium green and pubescent.

Red Brazil cherry has tolerance for drought and grows in almost any type of soil.

This tropical plant can successfully be grown in pots indoors in the cooler zones. Indoors, misting of the plants is helpful in winter.

The plump, roundish cherries, which are substantially larger than those produced by black cherry, choke cherry or pin cherry, are mature when they turn a deep blackish purple.

Additional Comments: The Native Americans had many uses for Wild Cherry bark including a tea made from the inner bark to ease labour pains, diarrhoea and lung problems. Chinese physicians prescribe Prunus yedoensis for coughs.

Cornelian Cherry rarely reaches sufficient height to be an effective shade tree, but it is useful as a small garden specimen, patio tree or landscape accent tree. Its flaking, mottled bark is quite attractive.
