MORETON BAY CHESTNUT, a tall tree known botanically as Castanospermum australe (natural order Leguminosae), native of Queensland and New South Wales. The pods are almost cylindrical, about 9 in.

Soils: Malabar chestnuts are not overly fussy about soil as long as it is well drained.

Apple trees can grow to a height of 30 feet and a width of 15 feet with a growth of 8 to 12 feet per year. They require rich soil, moderate watering, good drainage and full sun.

Native to Australia, as the name indicates, Australian Chestnut is a large evergreen tree growing to 40 m tall, though it may be found much smaller. Leaves are 15 X 6-7 cm , pinnate, with 11-15 leaflets.

Although Pachiras can get rather large in size, most gardeners are familiar with them as the small potted plants with interweaved stems and attractive leaves.

Guiana chestnut is grown both for tropical effect and for its edible nuts. It can also be potted up as a houseplant. The nuts taste sort of like peanuts. They are harvested when the seed pods burst and eaten raw, roasted, or fried.

Spanish Chestnut, once established, is tolerant of drought. It does best in sandy, well drained soils and is highly tolerant of acidic soils. If kept too dry when young, Spanish chestnut may remain as a shrub and never grow to tree size.

Chinese chestnuts grow best in the acid soils of East Texas and are poorly adapted to the extremely alkaline soils of portions of South, Central and West Texas.

The genus Lithocarpus has been described as oak-like and chestnut-like; that is, with features intermediate between the genera Quercus and Castanea.

Five genera are native to North America, including the chinquapin (Chrysolepis), tanbark oak (Lithocarpus) and the chestnut (Castanea). Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak, Quercus suber.
