The Chilean wine palm is native to Chile where it has the most southerly distribution of any palm in South America. It is widely cultivated in warm temperate regions of the world.

I'll admit to having had no luck growing this wonderful giant feather palm, but must mention the amazing specimen in Rock Hill, SC, planted in 1993 by palm collector Tamar Myers.
Jubaea chilensis (Chilean wine palm): Hardy to about -14°C (7°F), but it will not tolerate cold, windy situations. In mild areas, it can develop an erect trunk to about 5m (16ft) but is very slow growing.

It may also be fermented into alcoholic beverages inspiring the common name Chilean wine palm. This sap is obtained from the mighty trunks. The palms are felled and the crown removed. Several quarts of sap ooze from the wound each day.
