Chilling Requirements: Stone fruit trees such as peaches develop their vegetative and fruiting buds in the summer, and as winter approaches, the buds go dormant in response to both shorter days and cooler temperatures.

Chilling units in Texas vary from 100 hours or fewer in the southern tip of Texas to more than 1,000 hours in the Panhandle. If plants requiring many hours of chilling are planted too far south, they will not bloom and grow normally in the spring.

A chilling period. Depending on the variety, it takes 8 to 16 weeks for the planted bulbs to root. Any dark, relatively moist place that provides steady temperatures between 35 and 48°F (40°F is ideal) is fine.

The reason chilling injury occurs, is because of the makeup of the cell membrane.

They need a chilling in the autumn to flower well. I can be left outside until temperatures are in the high thirties. Avoid frost though.

After the minimum chilling period has been reached, bring your pots in. Place them in a warm, sunny window. The warmth is your bulbs' signal to awaken. As soon as they emerge from the ground, they will need light to grow and bloom.

Chile spray (1 cup of fresh chilli peppers pulped with 1/2 cup of dried chilli and 1 cup of water) controls caterpillars and loopers, which are also deterred by sprinkled cayenne pepper.

Peonies grow best in cool climates, because they will only bloom well if they experience a pronounced period of winter chilling. Peonies grow and flower best in full sun, but will tolerate some light afternoon shade.

It has bright yellow flowers and dense, lushly green foliage that is evergreen in tropical climates, but deciduous in chillier places.

This species is widely grown throughout the world, but especially in warm temperate to tropical climates, for its edible fruit - the sweet and chilli peppers. There are many named varieties[183].

It is specific for the initial phases of influenza when there is chilliness, aching muscles and an acute fever. It is thought that the salicylic acid in the herb may be responsible for alleviating myalgias and neuralgias.

'Bababerry' needs some chilling in the winter and is a heat tolerant cultivar. Fruits are borne in late spring and fall. Raspberries are biennials that perform best in full sun with plenty of water and a good fertilizing when blooms begin.

If cherimoyas do not receive enough chilling, the trees will go dormant slowly and then experience delayed foliation. The amount of chilling needed is estimated to be between 50 and 100 hours.

Since they bloom in late summer and don't require winter chilling, look for packaged corms in garden centres in spring, not fall; named cultivars are sold in summer already potted.

Old Fashioned Bleeding Heart is extremely cold-hardy & does well in much chillier climates than ours, though wanting more sun in chillier zones. Temperate Puget Sound is just about as "hot" a location as it does really well in.

If you don't live in an area that will provide a good winter chilling period, or if you prefer to start your seeds in a tray instead of in the garden, you will have to provide an artificial chilling period.

Remember, it still needs chilling as described above. Keep the bulbs in a paper sack during the cold treatment. When you see it sprouting, bring the bulbs out and place them in the vases. Set vases in a bright, yet cool location.

Like other spring-flowering bulbs, narcissus can be forced to bloom, but will require a chilling period of about 12 weeks.

Common lilacs are not found in Florida and the deep south because areas below zone 7 are not cold enough to provide lilacs with the period of chilling they require.

Many of us are familiar with images of monkeys soaking up the watery warmth of a hot spring in the midst of a bone chilling, wintery landscape.

It can take several weeks for the seeds to germinate. Pre-chilling the seed in the refrigerator and then soaking the seed overnight in warm water, before planting, helps speed the process slightly and gives better germination results.

A spot with a little sloping with a south or east exposure that can catch the early sunshine and hold it late but stays out of the direct path of the chilling north and northeast winds. A building, or an old fence can offer protection.

Rhubarb plants will occasionally send up flowers and seed stalks in the middle of the plants. The flowers and seed stalks can occur due to winter's chilling conditions. Stalks can also occur due to natural maturity of the plants.

Sowing in July or August for germination the following spring also satisfactory, since a warm treatment prior to chilling is beneficial.

Propagation is by seed or division in the spring. The seed germinates in 3 to 4 weeks at 70 to 75 degrees. Plants may be planted in a cold frame in spring or fall. Fresh seed may need chilling.
