Chinese Lantern, Flowering Maple
Commonly known as the Flowering Maple, these tropical and semi-tropical shrubs or plants are prized for their rapid growth and plentiful, long-lasting blossoms. Some species have maple-like leaves and shape.

They're sometimes called Chinese lantern plants because of the shape of the drooping papery flowers. You can expect the big, bell-shaped flowers of red, pink, orange, yellow or peach to cover flowering maples from spring through fall.

Chinese lantern fruit capsules in late summer are more colorful than those of K. paniculata, goldenrain tree. Several grow in the large lawn of Willis Court at Rains Houses, but they are not thriving.

Finally, I emerged with a sultry harlot of a bougainvillea, curvaceous, serpentine, with papery yellow blossoms like tiny Chinese lanterns. Framed against the frozen landscape, it looked exotic. Exotic enough that I secretly named her Carlotta.
