Lenten and Christmas roses (Helleborus) are very difficult to move when more than a few years old. Usually you can find tiny seedlings around the base. These are easy to move.

The so-called Christmas roses, and Lenton roses, are hellebores. The Hellebore is a great plant with a lot to offer gardeners at a time when not much else is going on.

One of my favorite acaulescent species is the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger. While rumored to be difficult to grow in the South, the large clumps in both my garden and others throughout the South confirm this rumor to be unfounded.

Commonly referred to as the "Christmas rose" as its frequently in bloom during the holiday season. The specific epithet, niger refers to its black roots. This is probably the hardiest of all the species and can most likely survive into zone 3.

The earliest to bloom of these, the Christmas rose (H. niger), flowers in December and January but is more difficult to grow than the Lenten rose or its hybrids.

Hellebores are noted for their early blooming, particularly the black hellebore or Christmas rose (H. niger), with evergreen leaves and white or greenish blossoms that resemble wild roses.

The Christmas rose (H. niger) is not quite as large and blooms a bit earlier than Lenten rose when grown in warm winter areas.
