O. cinnamomea is an elegant N. American Fern with pale green fronds; the variety angustata is smaller, and the fronds are less inclined to droop. This species, like O. regalis, is deciduous.

Osmunda cinnamomea known as the cinnamon fern produces its spores on separate leaf blades arising from the center of the plant. They're a wooly cinnamon color.

Viburnum cinnamomifolium, or Cinnamomum-leafed viburnum, is not an allusion to cinnamon. It is the name of the camphor tree, Cinnamomum camphora. The large, drooping, ribbed evergreen leaves on red stems make for a handsome appearance all year round.

Root rot, especially the fungus Phytophthora cinnamomi, can be a problem, particularly in poorly drained soil. Prevention -making sure the plants are not too crowded and that the drainage is satisfactory - is the best method of control.

Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamomea): This upright, deciduous fern is native throughout South Carolina. It grows 24 to 36 inches tall. Plant in sun to full shade, with constant moisture if planted in sun.

If you obtain one yourself, or raise one from a nut, be aware that at least while young this species is hurt if you fertilize it with phosphorus. Also the tree is very susceptible to Phytophthora cinnamomi root rot.
