Cistus 'Warley Rose'

Native to the Mediterranean region, these evergreen, spring- and summer-blooming shrubs are perfect for sunny, dry or hot situations and seashore plantings.

 


Cistus or Rock Roses is a small genus with only 20 species and a couple of subspecies and varieties described, out of which a dozen are native of the Canary Islands.

Cistus originate from dry rocky parts of the Mediterranean and Canary Islands and are therefore drought-tolerant and low maintanance. They produce masses of flowers in midsummer, but each lasts only one day.

Cistus x skanbergii is a naturally occuring hybrid of C. parviflorus x C. monspeliensis, & is native to Greece & Sicily.

Cistus Creticus, or European Rock Rose, the only other plant of the order used in medicine, yields the gum resin Ladanum or Labdanum, a natural exudation valued as a stimulant expectorant and emmenagogue.

Cistus flowers late May to early June and has aromatic leaves. Not all are hardy but tougher species are ‘Silver Pink' and the small Cistus crispins with purple blooms that have yellow centres in late July.

Pacific Northwest nurseries that have offered Chilean Hazels via mail order include Burnt Ridge (not since the 1980s), Cistus, Colvos Creek, Forest Farm, and Heronswood (1999-2002). At any one time, maybe none of these nurseries will have any.

Both have only three petals, the former, alone in the family, has staminodes. Tor the phylogeny of Cistus, see Guzmán and Vargas (2005); the relationships of Halimium and Cistus are intertwined (Civeyrel et al. 2011).

C. hypocistis has been shown to infect mainly Halimium halimifolium and Cistus monspeliensis in Portugal[3].

The biblical myrrh, probably a mixture of several substances, may also have been derived in part from the unrelated rockrose (genus Cistus), a small evergreen plant of the Mediterranean area.
