Often times Citrus fruits will start dropping as a result of high heat and low humidity. This is sometimes unavoidable, but is exacerbated by very dry soil. If you have extensive fruit drop (especially in summer), be sure that the soil is moist.
Citrus fruits are native to southern China and Southeast Asia where they have been cultivated for some 4,000 years. Mandarins from southern China were brought to Europe and the Americas in the 1800's.
As with most other citrus fruits, the descendance of oranges is not known exactly. Despite the earlier belief that assumed a Chinese origin, it is now generally believed that oranges originate from Northern or North Eastern India.

Pummelos are the largest of all citrus fruits. Some swell to 8 inches in diameter and a several-pound heft. They are far more popular in Asia than in the U.S.
In California the kiwifruit is an appropriate crop wherever citrus fruits, peaches and almonds are successful. All cultivars need a certain period of winter chilling and their needs vary dramatically, dependent upon cultivar.
It has a scent similar to violets; whilst popular in the 1800's, it is now used to scent and preserve pomander balls, spice wreaths, or sachets. Pomander balls are citrus fruits or small apples into which cloves are inserted in even rows.
While patio trees are much smaller than their standard counterparts, they can still produce clusters of delectable citrus fruits each year. These trees may also be grown indoors all year long or placed out on the patio during warmer months.
However, their chief interest and possibilities are as stocks upon which some citrus fruits have been successfully budded. On the other hand, buds of the cherry-orange thrive on stocks of species of the genus Citrus.
