Discovered in 1818,Clematis montana was later introduced into cultivation by Lady Amherst in 1831. The vigorous vine is a popular clematis choice, not only for its rampant growth but also for its wonderfully fragrant flowers.

Clematis montana and its clan do not require annual pruning, so they are quite happy to be left alone smothering the wall or buildings until you feel they have outgrown their allotted space. Some of the best for this purpose are C. m. f.

Be careful what variety of climber you use though, some of the vigorous plants like clematis Montana or the Russian vine (Polygonum baldschuanicum) will quickly swamp the tree and even possibly kill it.

Clematis macropetala has finely divided foliage and small blue flowers in April.
Clematis montana is very vigorous and will quickly cover an old tree or garden shed as well as a wall. It is covered with small white or pink flowers in May.
