Cleyera

Cleyera japonica'Tricolor'.
Genus of about 18 evergreen trees and shrubs that are mostly native to Mexico and Central America; one species is from eastern Asia. Cleyera japonica var.

The Japanese Cleyera is an evergreen shrub with leathery, green foliage, the leaves flush a bronzy-red color and are very shiney. Japanese Cleyera has small, yellowish-white flowers that are very fragrant.

New leaves are brownish-red. Has Fragrant Flower. SelecTree lists no cultivars of japonica.

Cleyera likes a moist, well drained, acidic soil. Overgrown shrubs may be pruned. Cutting back can rejuvenate the plant. Young leaves are quite tender, so pruning should be done well before chance of frost.

Sakaki (Cleyera japonica) is a flowering evergreen tree native to warm areas of Japan, Korea and mainland China. It can reach a height of 10 m.

Cleyera (Freziereae) lacks pericyclic fibres in the petiole. It, and also Eurya (for which see Brown 1938), secrete nectary from the basal part of the ovary wall.

Most broadleaf shrubs such as azaleas, camellias, privets, glossy abelia, nandina and cleyera respond well to renewal pruning.
