Clover is a good expectorant; it soothes the spasms of the bronchi, convulsive cough and children's cough. It is also anti-asthmatic. It reduces the symptoms affections such as syphilis; it stimulates biliary secretion and relaxes the muscles.

Sweet-clover
Melilotus officinalis (Melilotus alba)
Sweet-clover can have white or yellow flowers. The white-flowered variety was formerly considered to be separate species, Melilotus alba.

Bur Clover is an annual herb 6-22 inches tall, maturing in 6-8 weeks. Superficially, it looks like a clover producing burs. It has leaves with 3 clover-like leaflets.

Lore: Clover has been used as a charm and healing herb in Europe since pre-history. It came to America so early on that eastern Native American tribes developed traditional uses for it before Europeans could effect genocide on them.

NOTE: Red clover (Trifolium pratense, pea family), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum, dock family), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa, pea family) can sometimes cause similar poisoning.

Additional Comments: According to the Doctrine of Signatures, the white crescentic markings on the leaflets of red clover were seen as a sign that the plant could be of benefit in the treatment of cataracts.

Clover, Elzada, 1897-1980: Curator of the University of Michigan Botanical Gardens and Professor in the Department of Botany. Specialized in succulents.

Clover (Basibuguk meaning "small leaves" or Trifolium pratense), dried flowers, leaves and combinations with other herbs (roots) was used as a medicine (for heart trouble), but its primary use was as food and as a tea.

A clover that prefers heavy, moist soil. The flowers on this legume form small heads with purple or pink flowers. Can be distinguished from other clovers by the pea-shaped flower pods.

All clovers can be called shamrocks, but not all shamrocks are clovers. Many more plants are called shamrocks around St. Patrick's Day than the rest of the year when they are probably called 'Oxalis' or 'clover.' ...

But, clover doesn't make an especially good houseplant, so most of the "shamrocks" I see for sale to mark the holiday are Oxalis, a completely unrelated plant from the tropics.

White Clover is found in meadows & pastures & along roadsides. It is intentionally planted along with grasses to enrich pastures for cattle, horses, sheep, or goats.

Leaves: Clover-like trifoliate leaves have a blue-green coloring.
Flowers: Pea-like blossoms start as plump, tight buds. The flowers are borne on long racemes and are a vivid blue, often with flecks of cream or yellow.

If you compare clovers to other members of the Pea family then you will see that they share more in common with alfalfa and sweet clover than with other plants like beans or caragana bushes.

RELIGIOUS: Clover brings luck, prsperity, and health. Carrying a three-leaf clover gives you protection. Worn over the right breast it will bring you success in all undertakings.
