Celosia are also called Cockscomb and Woolflowers. Celosia are noted for their brilliant "rooster comb" plumes. Celosia makes a very showy, unusual display in borders and as edging.

Celosia, a member of the Amaranthaceae family, is also known as garden cockscomb, red fox or wool flower, and originated in tropical Asia, most commonly India.

This antique variety of feather cockscomb was highly recommended in 1935 for its brilliant array of silky plumes in buttercup-yellow, magenta, and burgundy. Today, these graceful forms of the past have mostly been replaced with chubby dwarf varieties.

The floral axis sometimes appears as if formed by several peduncles united together, constituting a fasciated axis, as in the cockscomb, in which the flowers form a peculiar crest at the apex of the flattened peduncles.

The crest may look rather like the cockscomb on a rooster (though not bright red), or it may be merely the suggestion of a raised furry patch, similar to those seen on Dutch or Spanish irises. It is usually a distinctive color or pattern.
