Verbascum thapsus
Common mullein leaves are grayish with soft, velvety hairs. The plant is a biennial, living for two years. In its first year, it grows leaves in a basal rosette (see the bottom photo).

 


BACKGROUND: Common mullein is a monocarpic perennial (i.e., takes two or more years to flower and die).

120 (170)cm, Common Mullein is a biannual species with white pubescent leaves in a dense basal rosette and a tall, usually unbranching, candle-like spike covered with numerous large bright yellow and fragrant flowers.

Seeds of Common Mullein can remain viable in the soil for hundreds of years and seeds that become deeply buried may germanate when exposed by excavation or errosion.

The common mullein (V. thapsus), also called flannel plant and torches, was formerly a favorite multipurpose medicinal plant; it is still occasionally used for domestic remedies, e.g., as a tea for coughs.
