Conifers
These trees are named after their characteristic fruits, or cones. Most of them are evergreens, which gives them a constancy of form, regardless of season.

CoNIFERALES
Trees and shrubs characterized by a copious branching of the stem and frequently by a regular pyramidal form. Leaves simple, small, linear or short and scale-like, usually persisting for more than one year.

Pruning Conifers (Needle-Type Evergreens)
Most upright-growing plants in this group such as spruce, pine, cedar and fir have branches spaced evenly around the main trunk. They develop a symmetrical growth habit and become quite large at maturity.

Conifer (but not a true cedar), evergreen tree, 40-60 ft (12-18 m) tall, (180 ft in wild), narrow, pyramidal, buttressed trunk. Short ascending branches, drooping at the tips.

Conifer vs. deciduous; there are some differences. Ernie Kuo quotes Mr. Wu of Hong Kong, saying in effect, wire and bend the conifer to the form you like and prune the deciduous tree.

Coniferous, evergreen tree with a pyramid-like shape with short branches. Foliage is white tipped and in winter is often brown to green. This plant enjoys good sun exposure and a moist, acidic soil. North American native.

Coniferous trees are also known as evergreens. They have long, thin waxy needles. The wax gives them some protection from freezing temperatures and from drying out. Evergreens don't loose their leaves in the winter like deciduous trees.

This conifer makes a slim column of medium height that has very dense, slightly fluffy looking, sea green foliage.

This conifer isn't considered deer resistant. Perhaps the yellow oriental spruce is an acquired taste and the deer in my neighborhood haven't found it, yet.

Dwarf conifers come with gold, chartreuse, or deep green needles.
Look for 4- or 6-inch pots of Canada hemlock, false or Monterey cypress, and juniper.
After the holidays, move to a larger pot or plant in the ground.

This is a coniferous evergreen with year-round interest and a graceful shape. Young foliage emerges a pale shade of yellow in a herringbone pattern in the spring and is a striking contrast to the deeper green of the older needles by summer.

In most of the country (zones 4-8), even the conifers have joined the picture, although variegation in this family is far from common. The most popular variegated conifer is the dragon's eye pine.
