Garden dracaena or cabbage palm (Cordyline australis), the traditional 'spike' in the centre of summer containers, produces narrow, upright, arching leaves, stemless at first, then gradually developing a thick trunk, becoming quite palm-like.

Adding texture are several spiky dracaenas (Cordyline albertii) that contrast strikingly with white 'I Bless' reblooming iris. Silver dusty miller (Senecio cineraria 'New Look') adds yet another thread to the panoply of shapes, forms, and colors.

Some foliage plants that do well in a small-mouthed terrarium include creeping fig (Ficus pumila), Ti plant ( Cordyline terminalis), ribbon plant (Dracaena sanderiana), earth star (Cryptanthus acaulis), ...

Houseplants: arrowhead vine (Syngonium); bloodleaf (Iresine); bromeliads, especially billbergia, neoregelia, and vriesea; calathea (peacock plant, zebra plant); cordyline; ctenanthe; and maranta (arrowroot, prayer plant, rabbit's foot).

Examples include palms, eucalypts, bananas, agaves, cordylines, oleanders, and acacias. Choosing the right species, and siting them carefully, can make a Seattle garden look like it belongs to an owner longing for San Diego.
