Cordyline Australis ‘New Zealand Cabbage Palm'
For those who like architectural plants to give their garden some dramatic structure, Cordyline australis is a palm-like tree from New Zealand that will bestow a sense of exotic grandeur.

Cordyline australis is a tree which reaches 12-40 ft (4-12 m) in height. Young trees have a straight, unbranched trunk, whereas mature trees usually have branched trunks. The drooping, evergreen leaves are 12-24 in (30-60 cm) long.

Cordyline australis AGM: palm-like tree, branching sparsely with age. In the UK they reach 3-10m (10-30ft) in height, with 1-4m (3½-13ft) spread. Light green leaves. Panicles of white flowers produced occasionally in summer.

Cordyline australis
General Notes
Green Dracena is quite common tough and is a popular and durable accent tree, often used in a Spanish context. It is very slow growing. Once established, it tolerates heat, poor soils, dryness and wind.

Garden dracaena or cabbage palm (Cordyline australis), the traditional 'spike' in the centre of summer containers, produces narrow, upright, arching leaves, stemless at first, then gradually developing a thick trunk, becoming quite palm-like.

Take stem cuttings in spring. Sow seed in a cold frame as soon as ripe.
