Cornelian Cherry or Dogwood
The Cornelian cherry is actually a type of dogwood. Cornus mas, or Cornelian cherry, provides tart red fruits similar to the cherry.

 


Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) is not a cherry at all but a kind of dogwood. Though we seldom see it in Arkansas gardens, it grows well here and makes a good show because the competition is scarce in February.

Cornus mas has an abundance of small yellow flowers on naked twigs in February. These are tiny and beautiful, and they have a fresh, almost acidic fragrance.

Small tree with arching branches that can reach 20-25' tall. Known for its frothy display of yellow flowers presented on bare twigs in early spring, and bright red cherry-like drupes in summer.

Mature Height/Spread: The Cornelian cherry will grow 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide. It is a rounded, multi-stemmed small tree or large shrub with a network of fine stems.

For early spring bloom, there is no better plant than this excellent little dogwood from Eastern Europe. It is the perfect edible ornamental for gardeners in zones 5 through 8.

Cornelian Cherry rarely reaches sufficient height to be an effective shade tree, but it is useful as a small garden specimen, patio tree or landscape accent tree. Its flaking, mottled bark is quite attractive.

Cornus was the ancient Latin name of cornelian cherry, Cornus mas. The English name dogwood derives from Old English dagge, a dagger, skewer, or sharp pointed object.
