This small tree has flat clusters of fragrant white flowers that bloom in early summer or late spring. It is an easy tree to grow, tolerant of dry to moist soils and sun to light shade.

Only Cornus alternifolia has alternate leaves. The big, showy flowers of some dogwoods are illusionary. The showy, whitish "petals" are really bracts, while the true flowers are much smaller and clustered together in the center.
