Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) is not a cherry at all but a kind of dogwood. Though we seldom see it in Arkansas gardens, it grows well here and makes a good show because the competition is scarce in February.

Small tree with arching branches that can reach 20-25' tall. Known for its frothy display of yellow flowers presented on bare twigs in early spring, and bright red cherry-like drupes in summer. Attractive, flaky bark.

Every so often, you might see fruit that looks like a speckled copy of the red, oval-shaped fruit on corneliancherry dogwood (Cornus mas). The 5/8"-long fruit is covered with silvery scales that dull the surface.
