Costus speciosus or Cheilocostus speciosus or crape ginger is possibly the best known cultivated species of the genus Costus. This plant is native to southeast Asia, especially on the Greater Sunda Islands in Indonesia.

Costus are easily distinguished from other commonly cultivated gingers because the leaves spiral around the main stem like a circular stairway. In fact they are called "spiral gingers".

Costus Amazonicus variegata
A native of Ecuador and Peru, this ginger is grown for its gorgeous foliage and quite remarkable flowersl. The leaves are arranged spirally around the stems in much the same fashion as other costus gingers.

The name Costmary is derived from the Latin costus (an Oriental plant), the root of which is used as a spice and as a preserve, and 'Mary,' in reference to Our Lady.
