Crocosmia (J.E. Planchon, 1851; pronounced /krɵˈkÉ'zmiÉ™/)[1] is a small perennial genus in the iris family Iridaceae, native to the grasslands of Cape Floristic Region, South Africa.

Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'Lucifer' is a corm producing plant in the Iris family. So it is not surprising that the leaves are fan shaped but unlike most irises the leaves are pleated.

Crocosmias x crocosmiiflora is a cross between C. aurea and C. pottsii. Hybrids of this beautiful cross include the ever-popular C. 'Lucifer' and many other cultivars of merit.

Lucifer Crocosmia is hardy throughout Arkansas. The corms should be planted 5 inches deep in a well drained, but moderately moist, sunny site.

Crocosmias are old to gardening, having been intensely hybridized in France since no later than the 1870s, & attracted English hybridizers by the mid 1890s. It is even so under-utilized, despite its extreme beauty & ease of care.

Crocosmia care
Since they bloom in late summer and don't require winter chilling, look for packaged corms in garden centres in spring, not fall; named cultivars are sold in summer already potted.

The range should include certain hardy bulbs or corms, such as crocosmia, which contribute greatly to the summer display, also certain dwarf perennials.
