Crocus chrysanthus (Snow Crocus) is a plant of the Crocus genus in the Iridaceae family. It grows wild in the Balkans and Turkey with vivid orange-yellow flowers.

Crocus laevigatus var fontenayi or Fontenay Winter Crocus is an old gardened form with lilac flowers.

Crocus don't garner a lot of enthusiasm amongst many gardeners because they're small and, for the most part, similar in appearance. But there are exceptions. One such person was a genteel southern gardener named Elizabeth Lawrence (1904-1985).

The crocus flowers fade rapidly in warm weather and the foliage will disappear by summer but it's terribly considerate of the spring crocus to put on its show early in the season when it's most appreciated.

The saffron crocus is the most familiar due to its history of culinary, dye, and medicinal uses. It's also the most commonly available species. The broad, six- to twelve-inch long leaves grow briefly in the spring and then die by midsummer.

Types of Autumn Crocus - Meadow Saffron
Colchicum 'Glory of Heemstede' is a rich pink goblet shaped flower which stands up to wet weather quite well. The flowers - which are quite fragrant - are followed by narrow upright foliage.

Often called autumn crocus, colchicums are not true crocus, but members of the lily family-Liliaceae. In spring, the plants deliver up seven to ten-inch long, narrowly ovate leaves that remain in the garden, feeding the bulb, until July.
