For a heat-loving plant, the cucumber has all the connotations of coolness attached to it. Sliced cucumbers are still recommended to soothe hot, tired eyelids and for skin irritations.

Cucumbers are usually eaten raw in salads, or sliced with onions, vinegar and salt, or they are pickled. But they can be cooked, too. Try quick sautéed cukes with dill and butter. Or a cream of cucumber soup. Or use them in stir fry.

Dill has a refreshing aroma and delicious tang, either fresh or dried. Snip fresh leaves into soups and salads. Dill is very popular in cucumber dishes, dips and sour cream, fish and vinegarettes.
It tastes cucumber-like and saline and is odourless. Borago is indigenous to Britain, Europe and North Africa, and naturalised in North America.
