Cuphea - Pretty plants, of which C. platycentra (Cigar-plant) is useful for the summer flower garden. It is a dwarf plant, about 12 inches high, with vermilion tube-shaped blossoms.

Description
Cuphea llavea is a bushy to mounding perennial subshrub that is native to Mexico. This perennial will flower from spring till fall and is a great attractor of hummingbirds to the garden.

Cuphea micropetala (Candy Corn Plant) - A small evergreen shrub that grows to 1-3 feet tall with narrow penstemon-like foliage clothes the red stems.

Cuphea originates from the Greek word, kyphos, meaning curved, denoting its curved seed capsule. At the University of Georgia, Casimir Jaworski and Sharod Phatak bred the species that brought out the purple calyx on a compact shrub.

Masses of 1" purple tubes are lipped with two upward facing glowing red petals. The blooms are produced from spring to fall on this upright to mounding perennial.

Cuphea ignea goes by a few common names and resembles other plants. Look for the botanical name to be sure you're getting this plant.

The only down side I have found for cupheas in general is that Japanese beetles think they taste just fine. Otherwise, I have had no problems with my plants as long as they get reasonable care.

Other blooming tropicals widely available as container plants are Allamanda, Cuphea, Ixora, Lantana, Mandevilla, passionflower (Passiflora), Pentas, leadwort (Plumbago), blue trumpet vine (Thunbergia grandiflora) and Tibouchina.
