Monterey Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa) - A very graceful and often stately tree, much planted and succeeding well near the sea coast. It is described in catalogues and even in books on Forestry as hardy, but it is not so, perishing in severe winters.

X Cupressocyparis leylandii is an intergeneric cross between Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (Alaskan Cedar) and Cupressus macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress) that was found in England in the 1800's.

Leyland cypress is a bigeneric hybrid (the reason for the "x" before the Latin name) between Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) and the Alaskan cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) that occurred accidentally on a Welch estate in 1892.
