CUSTARD APPLES, or Annonas, grow in hotter countries than common apples. Several species are edible, especially Annona tripetela, A. squamosa and A. glabra. A.

American shrub, or low tree of the Custard Apple family. A. triloba forms a small tree, with dull purple flowers, about 2 inches across. It bears fruit eaten by the inhabitants of the Southern States; hence the name.

Pawpaw (Amsonia triloba), an understory tree usually growing 10 to 15 feet tall, is unusual in that it's a cold hardy plant belonging to the tropical custard apple family. It ranges as far north as the Great Lakes and westward to the prairies.
