Cyclamen flower growing is not easy, I will warn you from the start. If rooms are kept at a temperature of 21° C during the winter, no attempt should be made to grow them.

Cyclamen africanum grows in scrub and rocky gullies in northern Algeria and Tunisia. It is very closely related to Cyclamen hederifolium, and will interbreed with it.

Cyclamen are traditionally sold (in the Northern hemisphere) during the Christmas season and into the winter as a florist plant. Most will bloom from mid-November until spring, provided conditions are satisfactory.

Cyclamen can be re-bloomed year after year, however, the procedure is not easy. Provide a growing area with full sun indoors, but partial shade outdoors. During growth periods keep the soil evenly moist.

Growing Cyclamen as House Plants
The most important criteria for success with growing a Cyclamen are
cool temperatures, fresh air, and ample moisture.

Cyclamens do well in the thick roots of shrubs & trees, up next to root crowns, for they like dryish shade. Even in the wild they are found close to tree trunks.

Most gardeners in the U.S. are quite familiar with the florists Cyclamen which are hybrids of C. persicum.

Answer: Anyone who has grown many cyclamens has run into trouble with mites. They make their presence known just when the buds appear and the plants refuse to bloom. The buds turn brown and dry and if, by chance, a bloom opens, it is crippled.

The Cyclamen is a popular houseplant that looks similar to our wild shooting stars (Dodecatheon). The common names of this family can be the source of some confusion.

There are several species of Florist's Cyclamen, and several more of Hardy Cyclamen.

This small plant has leaves like a cyclamen. The surface is marbled with silver lines and there is a mottled effect. Brown and white flowers appear from March to May. This plant grows some 15cm (6in) high and tends to spread.

African Violets are susceptible to aphids, cyclamen mites, thrips and mealy bugs.

These tough little flowers are cousins of the large-flowered cyclamen that are grown as winter pot plants. They make great ground cover for dry, shady areas.

The flowers resemble the blossoms of our native shootingstar- Dodecatheon-or a Cyclamen.

It produces long, thin trailing stems that have widely spaced, opposite, heart shaped leaves that are about an inch long and wide. The leaves are succulent with cyclamen-like markings of silver on the bluish-green upper leaf surface.
