Diverse and versatile, Dahlias are prized for their large, often spectacularly-colored and shaped blooms.

 


Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, perennial plants native to Mexico, Central America, and Colombia. There are at least 36 species of dahlia, some like D. imperialis up to 10 metres tall.[3] Dahlia hybrids are commonly grown as garden plants.

Dahlia 'Diana, 'Princess of Wales'
Dahlia 'Diana, 'Princess of Wales' was launched 14th February 2000, as a World Exclusive by America's largest horticultural mail order company Spring Hill Nurseries.

Dahlia merckii: A tough species (Botanical Group) dahlia, multi-branched, with mid-green leaves composed of toothed leaflets and profuse broad-rayed lilac-pink flowers with yellow disc florets that open in loose clusters above the foliage.

DAHLIA--WINTER STORAGE
After a light frost, cut dahlias to four to six inches above the soil. Dig tubers carefully with a spade or spading fork, taking care not to damage the fleshy root system. Keep as much of the soil attached as possible.

Planting Dahlias
Dahlias should not be planted until all danger of frost has passed, and the soil temperature reaches 58°-60° F.

After a light frost, cut dahlias to four to six (4 to 6) inches above the soil. Dig tubers carefully with a spade or spading fork, taking care not to damage the fleshy root system. Keep as much of the soil attached as possible. Allow soil to dry.

Dahlias appear to have made their official garden debut when seeds were sent in 1789 from the Mexico City Botanic Garden by the curator, Vincente Cervantes, to his friend Abbé Cavanilles, who was in charge of the Royal Gardens in Madrid.

Dahlia variabilis is a collective name for many cultivars derived from hybridization of D. pinnata with D. coccinea , hence comes in many varieties from dwarf to six feet tall.

Dahlia can be grown from seed. Start them indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost in your area. We recommend planting them in separate pots, allowing ample room for root growth. This will make transplanting easier.

Dahlias are available in just about any color or color combination that you can conceive - including this dark red (almost black!) blossom with a sporty yellow-green center.

The Dahlia is named after Dr. Dahl, a pupil of Linnaeus, but is also known, especially on the Continent, by the name 'Georgina.

It is probably the most obvious and widespread virus, one that also infects many other garden plants such as tulips, dahlias and delphiniums.

To see these half-forgotten plants is to like them instantly; along with dahlias and cannas, Canadian gardeners have rediscovered their charms in a big way.

In the dahlia the florets are rendered quilled, and are made to assume many glowing colours. In pelargonium the flowers have been rendered larger and more showy; and such is FIG. 40.

Some of the more tender bulbs like Gladioli and Dahlias will have to be lifted and stored to prevent frost damage. Dig them up, clean any soil off them (wash if necessary) and let them dry. Put into storage ready for replanting in the spring.

There are many different varieties of dahlias, all with showy flowers. Best in a sunny spot, they need to be supported with stakes. Dig up the tubers when frosts blacken the foliage, and bring the tubers indoors for winter.

Dig the roots up in fall, store them the same way as dahlias, and replant the following spring. I find this method of digging them up more trouble than it's worth, since the vines are easy to start from seed each year.
