A small deciduous tree of handsome appearance with deep green toothed leaves to 6 inches, furry and paler underneath, with odor like mint.

Discovered by the French missionary Armand David in 1896 (hence Davidia) and introduced in 1904 by Ernest Wilson.

Photinia davidiana (formerly Stranvaesia davidiana) is seriously underutilized, perhaps in part because the nursery trade hasn't come up with a decent common name for it.

Davidia involucrata, the handkerchief or ghost tree, is a most ornamental hardy Chinese tree ultimately of medium size with a broad, spreading habit. The large handsome leaves are reminiscent of those of the lime (tilia).

Davidia has flowers in capitula subtended by 2 large white bracts; it lacks a perianth and may have bitegmic ovules (but cf. Horne 1914). Diplopanax has recently been placed in Mastixiaceae s. str. (Eyde & Quiyun 1990; cf. Xiang et al. 1997).

Problems
Photinias are usually trouble-free, but can suffer from photinia leaf spot which is not fatal and is an environmental disorder linked to cold weather, rather than a disease.

Bract Tree (Davidia Involucrata) - A remarkable tree from the mountains of C. China, where the winters are severe, it has proved hardy in this country. It belongs to the Dogwood family, and the large white bracts are more showy than the flowers.
